Engineers of the 3rd century BC built Dujiangyan to tame the Minjiang River without a dam, and their system still waters the farmland of the Chengdu plains more than two millennia later. Rising nearby, Mount Qingcheng is honoured as the birthplace of Taoism, its slopes set with ancient temples celebrating the tradition. UNESCO joined mountain and waterworks in a single World Heritage inscription in 2000.
