Lake Langano is the only Rift Valley lake in Ethiopia considered safe for swimming, its brownish alkaline water naturally free of the bilharzia parasite that affects most regional lakes. The lake lies 200 kilometres south of Addis Ababa, bordered by acacia forest and the Abiata-Shalla Lakes National Park, making it a popular Ethiopian weekend retreat. Hippopotamus inhabit the deeper sections and are visible from the shoreline at dusk, while fishing eagles patrol the margins throughout the day.
