Harar Jugol, the walled old city of Harar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site composed of 362 alleyways and 99 mosques within a 16th-century defensive wall, making it one of Islam's holiest cities. Hyenas are fed nightly outside two of the old city gates in a tradition dating back at least to the 19th century, a ritual that draws considerable visitor interest. The city's unique Adare architectural tradition — colourfully decorated interior walls hung with wicker baskets — is best appreciated in the traditional Adare house museums.
