The lower Omo Valley in southwestern Ethiopia is inhabited by more than a dozen distinct ethnic groups — including the Mursi, Hamar, Karo, and Dassanech — whose traditional practices of body painting, scarification, and lip-plate adornment have remained largely intact into the modern era. The weekly markets at Turmi and Key Afer are genuine exchanges between communities rather than tourist arrangements, and the surrounding savanna and riverine landscape supports birdlife and wildlife along the Omo River tributaries. The area also lies adjacent to the Lower Omo Valley UNESCO sites with their Plio-Pleistocene fossil beds.
