Summer Palace, an Imperial Garden in Beijing

First laid out in 1750, ravaged in the war of 1860 and rebuilt on its old foundations in 1886, Beijing's Summer Palace turns hills and open water into a single composition, threading pavilions, halls, temples and bridges through the natural scenery. It stands as a high point of Chinese landscape-garden design, and UNESCO added the imperial garden to the World Heritage List in 1998.
