China's first banks grew up behind the walls of Ping Yao: in the 19th and early 20th centuries this Shanxi town handled draft banking for the whole of the country, and the imposing houses of its financiers still line the streets. Founded in the 14th century, the city preserves the layout, architecture and daily texture of a traditional Han Chinese town across five centuries of imperial history. UNESCO inscribed the Ancient City of Ping Yao in 1997.
