Mountain Resort and its Outlying Temples, Chengde

Each summer the Qing court left Beijing for Chengde, where between 1703 and 1792 emperors built the Mountain Resort: palaces, ceremonial halls and gardens set among lakes, pasture and forest in Hebei Province. Around it rose outlying temples in styles drawn from across the empire, Tibetan and Mongolian forms beside Chinese. UNESCO inscribed the resort and its temples in 1994 as a rare late monument of China's feudal age.
