One of the world's largest artificial reservoirs, created by the construction of the Aswan High Dam and extending roughly 550 kilometres south from Aswan into Sudan. The lake flooded the ancient Nubian homeland, requiring the relocation of entire communities and the salvage of numerous temples, including the dismantling and reconstruction of Abu Simbel on higher ground. The shallows of the lake support large populations of Nile crocodile and a diversity of waterbirds. Cruise vessels offering access to the relocated Nubian temples at Kalabsha and Amada supplement the Abu Simbel connection.
