A market town at the southern end of the Draa Valley in Morocco, historically the last major stop on the caravan route before the Sahara proper. A famous signpost in the town centre once cited the camel travel time to Timbuktu as 52 days. The surrounding landscape includes palm groves, dunes of the Erg Chegaga accessible by 4x4, and the ruins of the medieval Almoravid fortification of Amezrou across the river. The Glaoui kasbah in Amezrou, partially ruined, is characteristic of the earthen architecture of the Draa region.
