A small coastal town north of Beirut, one of the oldest continuously inhabited ports in the eastern Mediterranean, with a Phoenician sea wall still partially visible at the shoreline. The old town retains a compact historic centre with Ottoman-era churches, a medieval Crusader tower, and the remains of a Phoenician quarry. Sandy beaches to the north of town are calmer and less developed than those closer to Beirut. The town has also become known for small craft breweries, a novelty in the Lebanese context.
