High in northern Sichuan, the Jiuzhaigou valley climbs from forested gorges to peaks above 4,800 metres, its floor set with mineral-tinted lakes, narrow conic karst formations and broad waterfalls. The 72,000-hectare reserve shelters some 140 bird species along with endangered plants and animals, giant panda and Sichuan takin among them. UNESCO inscribed Jiuzhaigou on the World Heritage List in 1992.
