A protected area in the Farafra depression of Egypt's Western Desert characterised by formations of chalk-white limestone eroded by wind into monumental sculpted shapes — mushrooms, pinnacles, and animal-like forms rising from the flat desert floor. The surreal whiteness of the formations becomes luminous at full moon, when overnight camping within the park is a well-established practice. The contrast between the pale rock and the ochre sand, particularly at sunrise, produces striking photographic conditions. The park is reached by four-wheel-drive tracks south of the Farafra oasis.
