Morocco's longest river valley runs south from the High Atlas mountains toward the Sahara, lined with a near-continuous ribbon of date palm oases, mud-brick kasbahs, and Berber villages. The contrast between the lush green palm corridor and the surrounding hammada desert is visually striking. Numerous ruined and inhabited kasbahs dot the route between Agdz and Zagora, many of them centuries old. The valley floor markets trade in Medjool dates, saffron, and local handicrafts.
