For nearly 2,000 years Chinese emperors climbed Mount Tai to perform the rites of state, making this peak in Shandong an axis of imperial cult and popular devotion alike. Temples, inscriptions and stone stairways ascend through scenery that has moved artists and scholars across the dynasties, and the mountain endures as a symbol of Chinese civilization itself. UNESCO inscribed Taishan as a mixed cultural and natural World Heritage Site in 1987.
