Koprivshtitsa is a highland town in the western Sredna Gora mountains, preserved as a national architectural and historical reserve for its concentration of mid-19th century Bulgarian National Revival houses. The six house-museums, each representing a different phase of the style, display the characteristic overhanging upper storeys, shuttered oriel windows, and elaborately painted reception rooms. The town was the site of the April Uprising of 1876, the revolt against Ottoman rule whose suppression accelerated international recognition of Bulgarian national aspirations.
