The Dunajec River Gorge cuts a dramatic course through the Pieniny Mountains, where the river forms the border between Poland and Slovakia and threads between limestone pinnacles rising 300 metres directly from the water. Traditional wooden rafts punted by boatmen in regional costume carry visitors along an 18-kilometre section from Sromowce Wyżne to Szczawnica, a journey of roughly two hours through some of the most scenically concentrated terrain in the Carpathians. The Trzy Korony massif, its three peaks silhouetted against the southern sky, is the defining photograph of the gorge.
