The Masurian Lake District is a glacially formed plateau in northeastern Poland containing over 2,000 interconnected lakes, the largest of which — Lake Śniardwy — covers nearly 110 square kilometres. The region's network of navigable waterways makes it Poland's primary destination for sailing and kayaking holidays, with routes extending for hundreds of kilometres through canals and open water. In late August the vast reedbeds along the lake margins host migrating flocks of marsh harriers, white-tailed eagles, and cranes.
