Białowieża Forest straddles the Polish-Belarusian border and is the largest remaining fragment of primeval lowland forest in Europe, sheltering the continent's largest population of free-roaming European bison. The strictly protected core zone of the Polish side, accessible only with a licensed guide, contains ancient oaks, hornbeams, and spruce trees several centuries old growing in near-undisturbed conditions. Winter visits offer the best bison sightings as the animals move to forest edges in snow.
