The Belogradchik Rocks are a collection of sandstone and conglomerate formations rising up to 200 metres from the foothills of the Balkan Mountains in northwestern Bulgaria. Erosion over millions of years has sculpted pillars, arches, and towers into shapes traditionally named after figures from local legend. A 19th-century fortress built by Ottomans and later expanded by Austrian engineers exploits the rocks as natural bastions, integrating masonry walls between the stone columns.
