The moai of Rapa Nui — Easter Island — stand with their backs to the Pacific, colossal ancestors carved by a Polynesian society that reached this remote speck of land around AD 300 and developed its monumental art without outside influence. Between the 10th and 16th centuries, islanders quarried, moved and raised the enormous figures and their shrine platforms, creating a cultural landscape without parallel on Earth. UNESCO inscribed Rapa Nui National Park in 1995.
