Zakopane sits at the foot of the Tatra Mountains in southern Poland and serves as the country's principal alpine resort. The pedestrian Krupówki promenade is flanked by distinctive highlander timber architecture, and the town's open-air market sells regional smoked cheese, carved wooden crafts, and embroidered textiles. In winter the surrounding slopes draw skiers and snowboarders; summer brings hikers and cyclists into the valleys above.
