Eighteen lakes glitter improbably in the hyper-arid heart of the Sahara, fed by ancient groundwater in Chad's Ennedi region. The Ounianga Kebir group holds four salty lakes, led by 358-hectare, 27-metre-deep Lake Yoan; forty kilometres away, the fourteen lakes of Ounianga Serir lie between dunes, their surfaces half-covered by floating reeds that slow evaporation and fresh enough in places for fish to thrive. UNESCO inscribed the 62,808-hectare site in 2012.
