Scattered through the uplands of the western Balkans stand thousands of monumental medieval grave markers known as stećci — limestone blocks and slabs carved with spirals, arcades, crescents, hunts and dancing figures. The World Heritage series inscribed by UNESCO in 2016 protects 28 of the finest of these graveyards, shared between Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia, their stones raised between the 12th and 16th centuries and set out in rows after the medieval European custom.
