A long glacially formed lake stretching south of Munich between the Bavarian foothills, Starnberger See is one of the largest lakes in Germany by surface area. The western shore has traditionally attracted aristocratic villas and weekend residences, while the opposite shore offers quieter walking paths through lakeside forest. On clear days the horizon is closed to the south by the snow-capped crests of the Alps, creating a classic Bavarian lake-and-mountain panorama.
