A partially ruined Renaissance palace complex rising above the old town of Heidelberg, the castle represents one of the most significant examples of German Renaissance architecture despite suffering severe war damage in the 17th century. Its red sandstone facades, ornate courtyard, and vast wine vat have drawn visitors since the Romantic era. From the castle terrace, views extend across the Neckar River bridge, the old town rooftops, and the Odenwald hills to the east.
