One of the best-preserved medieval walled towns in Germany, Rothenburg ob der Tauber sits on a plateau above the Tauber River valley in Middle Franconia. Its intact circuit of towers and walls, half-timbered burgher houses, and the Gothic St. James's Church have made it the centrepiece of the Romantic Road tourist route. The Plönlein — a small fork in the road flanked by a tower and a half-timbered house — is among the most photographed street scenes in the country.
