Kruševo is the highest town in North Macedonia at an elevation of 1,350 metres, its compact old town preserving nineteenth-century vernacular architecture of considerable uniformity and charm. The town is significant in Macedonian national history as the site of the short-lived Kruševo Republic proclaimed during the Ilinden Uprising of 1903, and the modernist Makedonium monument erected in 1974 is among the most architecturally ambitious structures of the Yugoslav era. In winter the surrounding hills offer skiing on modest but reliable terrain.
