Matka Canyon is a gorge carved by the Treska River west of Skopje, its narrow cliffs rising above a chain of reservoirs accessible by boat, kayak, or a riverside footpath. Several medieval monasteries cling to the canyon walls at various levels, the most famous being the Monastery of St. Andrew with fourteenth-century frescoes. The canyon is also one of the most cave-rich areas in the Balkans, with Vrelo Cave at the water's edge claimed to be among the deepest underwater caves in the world.
