Sazan is a small island at the entrance to the Bay of Vlorë, the largest island in Albania, which served as a military base closed to civilians for most of the twentieth century. Its restricted history left the island's natural environment largely untouched, and the waters surrounding it are among the clearest and most biodiverse on the Albanian coast. The island has opened to limited boat tours in recent years, revealing Cold War-era military bunkers and tunnels carved into the limestone.
