Berat is a UNESCO-listed historic town on the Osum River in central Albania, known as the city of a thousand windows for the Ottoman domestic architecture that covers the hillside below the castle in rows of identical white-plastered houses with large multi-paned windows. The castle quarter on the hilltop is inhabited and contains several Byzantine churches, reflecting the layers of religious history in the region. The Gorica quarter across the river mirrors the hillside composition from the opposite bank.
