Počitelj is a fortified Ottoman-era town built amphitheatrically on a rocky hillside above the Neretva River, its cluster of towers, a clock tower, a mosque, and a fortified gate complex preserved largely intact and visible from the main road below. The settlement dates from the fifteenth century and represents one of the best-preserved examples of a small Ottoman garrison town in the Balkans. The climb to the upper fortress walls rewards with views over the Neretva valley and the surrounding karst hills.
