Corfu Old Town occupies a peninsula on the northeastern coast of Corfu island and reflects nearly five centuries of Venetian rule through its tall, narrow ochre and terracotta facades, arcaded streets, and the broad esplanade known as the Liston. Two imposing fortresses — the Old Fortress dating to Byzantine origins and expanded under Venice, and the New Fortress completed in the late sixteenth century — guard the town from sea. The Venetian-era street network, particularly the narrow Kantounia lanes, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
