A great loop of the Dja River almost encircles this reserve, drawing a natural moat around one of Africa's largest and least disturbed rainforests — nine-tenths of it essentially untouched. Within live 107 species of mammal, among them an exceptional variety of primates and five threatened species. UNESCO recognized the Dja Faunal Reserve as natural World Heritage in 1987, one of Cameroon's green strongholds.
