Cambodian Memorial Sites: From centres of repression to places of peace and reflection

Three places chart Cambodia's darkest years and its long reckoning with them: the former M-13 prison, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in the one-time S-21 prison, and Choeung Ek, the killing ground where S-21's victims died. Preserved since the fall of the Khmer Rouge, whose repression they document from 1971 to 1979, the sites today serve remembrance, education and peace. UNESCO inscribed the three memorials together in 2025.
