Malta's main fishing village occupies a wide bay on the southeastern coast and remains a working harbor of traditional luzzu fishing boats, painted in bold primary colors and decorated with the eye of Osiris on the prow. The Sunday fish market along the waterfront is one of the most photographically engaging weekly events in Malta, with the painted boats moored in rows behind the stalls. The ruins of a Phoenician temple at Tas-Silġ on the ridge overlooking the bay attest to the long history of settlement around this natural anchorage.
