Koh Ker: Archaeological Site of Ancient Lingapura or Chok Gargyar

For sixteen years in the 10th century, the Khmer court left Angkor for Koh Ker. King Jayavarman IV's rival capital — ancient Lingapura — served as the empire's sole seat from 928 to 944, laid out to mirror Indian conceptions of the cosmos and built with monolithic stone blocks of startling size. Temples, sanctuaries, inscriptions, wall paintings and sculpture survive throughout the forest. UNESCO added the archaeological site to the World Heritage List in 2023.
