The Sardinian capital rises above a wide gulf in four distinct historic quarters, with the Castello district, a walled medieval citadel on a hilltop, containing two Pisan towers, a Gothic cathedral, and sweeping views across the urban area to the lagoons and flamingo colonies of the Molentargius wetland. The Roman amphitheater cut into the rock of the hill is the largest surviving Roman structure in Sardinia. The wide sandy beach at Poetto, seven kilometers long, is accessible directly from the city center.
