The main city of Calabria on the Strait of Messina holds the National Museum of Magna Graecia, home to the Riace Bronzes, two life-size ancient Greek bronze warrior statues recovered from the seabed in 1972 and considered among the greatest surviving examples of classical Greek sculpture. The Lungomare Falcomatà waterfront promenade faces Sicily across the narrow strait and is said to be one of the most beautiful seafront walks in Italy. The atmospheric Fata Morgana mirage, in which Sicily appears elevated and distorted above the horizon, is occasionally visible from this coastline.
