Basilicata's only coastal town, Maratea occupies a steep mountainous stretch of the Tyrrhenian shore with a series of small coves and sea caves accessible by boat or footpath. A 22-meter white marble Christ the Redeemer statue on Monte San Biagio overlooking the sea is the town's most recognizable landmark, visible from the water many kilometers distant. The clarity and color of the water in the coves between Acquafredda and Sapri rival the more famous Amalfi and Cilento coastlines.
