Sperlonga is a white hilltop village on a limestone promontory jutting into the Tyrrhenian Sea between Rome and Naples, with sandy beaches on both sides of the headland and the ruins of Emperor Tiberius's coastal villa in a sea cave immediately below. The Museo Nazionale Archeologico di Sperlonga beside the cave displays monumental sculptural groups recovered from the grotto, likely by the same workshop responsible for the Laocoön group in the Vatican Museums. The whitewashed lanes of the medieval centro storico offer an understated alternative to the more famous Amalfi hill towns.
