Known informally as la città che muore — the dying city — Civita di Bagnoregio sits on an eroding tufa pinnacle in the Calanchi badlands of northern Lazio, connected to the neighboring town only by a single pedestrian footbridge. The medieval Etruscan-origin settlement is home to a small permanent population and a single main street of stone buildings that have remained structurally unchanged for centuries. The view from the footbridge or from the rim of the surrounding valley is the canonical image of the site.
