Marsala at the western tip of Sicily occupies the site of ancient Lilybaeum and is best known today for the fortified wine that bears its name and for the archaeological museum housing the only surviving ancient warship recovered from the seabed, a Carthaginian vessel from the First Punic War. Salt flats and windmills stretching south toward Mazara del Vallo create a low, horizontal landscape unusual in mountainous Sicily, and the shallow waters of the Stagnone Lagoon reflect pink sunsets.
