Stromboli is an active volcanic island in the Aeolian archipelago whose summit crater erupts in brief Strombolian-style bursts of incandescent lava every fifteen to twenty minutes, making it one of the most continuously active volcanoes on earth. Guided nighttime ascents to the 924-meter summit reveal the eruptions against a black sky reflecting off the sea, a spectacle difficult to replicate elsewhere. The black-sand beaches at Ginostra and the village of San Vincenzo offer quieter access to the island's dramatic character.
