Cefalù is a coastal town on the northern Sicilian shore dominated by a massive Norman cathedral begun in the 12th century and a sheer limestone promontory, La Rocca, rising directly behind the old quarter. The apse of the cathedral contains a celebrated Byzantine Christ Pantocrator mosaic regarded as one of the finest of its kind in the world. The medieval street grid between the cathedral and the small fishing harbor remains largely intact and pedestrian.
