Rebuilt entirely after the 1693 earthquake in a single unified baroque style, Noto is the finest example of Sicilian late baroque urban planning and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main axis, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, is lined with honey-colored limestone palazzi, convents, and churches whose facades display ornate carved balconies supported by fantastical stone figures. The warm golden tone of the local tufa intensifies in the late afternoon sun, making the street photography particularly rewarding.
