A mountain village deep in the Barbagia highlands of central Sardinia, Orgosolo is known across Italy for its tradition of political murals that cover the exterior walls of hundreds of buildings throughout the historic center. The paintings, begun in the 1960s and continuously added to, form an open-air record of Sardinian social and political history rendered in a direct figurative style. The surrounding oak and cork forests and the Supramonte plateau are accessible on foot or horseback.
