A well-preserved medieval mining town on the Colline Metallifere in the Maremma area of southern Tuscany, Massa Marittima has a lower historic city and an upper town added in the fourteenth century. The cathedral of San Cerbone in the lower town's irregular piazza is one of the finest Romanesque-Gothic churches in Tuscany, built in locally quarried travertine. The Museo della Miniera documents the long tradition of mineral extraction—silver, lead, and copper—that made the town prosperous in the medieval period.
