A circular walled village on a low hill between Siena and Poggibonsi, Monteriggioni was built by the Sienese Republic in the thirteenth century as a frontier fortress. The complete ring of medieval walls, punctuated by fourteen towers and two gates, is unusually low and wide, designed to resist artillery rather than medieval siege weapons. Dante cited the towers in the Inferno; the interior of the village is modest but the walls are walkable.
