The regional capital of the autonomous Aosta Valley, situated where the Great St Bernard and Little St Bernard pass routes converge, Aosta retains an exceptionally complete set of Roman urban remains within a still-inhabited city. The Roman theatre, forum cryptoporticus, city walls, and triumphal arch of Augustus are all visible in situ. The medieval collegiate church of Sant'Orso adds a cluster of Romanesque cloisters and an early-twelfth-century carved wooden choir.
