At the southern entrance to the Mont Blanc Tunnel at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif, Courmayeur is the highest-altitude ski resort in the Aosta Valley, with lifts reaching above 3,000 metres. The Skyway Monte Bianco gondola—the most technically advanced in Europe when it opened—ascends to the Punta Helbronner at 3,466 metres, where the Italian-French-Swiss border meets. The compact village centre retains nineteenth-century stone-and-wood architecture from its origins as an Alpine guide base.
